FAQs about therapy & my practice

  • I offer both! During our 15-minute phone consultation, we can discuss the best fit for your needs and our schedules.

  • Very possibly! As a participant in PSYPACT, I have been granted the Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT), which allows me to see clients virtually in almost 40 states (and counting). To find out if your state has passed PSYPACT legislation, click here.

  • Some good news: you don’t have to! You may have something specific you’re wanting to explore, confront, or change, but you also may not.

People who are curious about and willing to explore their histories and patterns will get the most out of the process. Essentially, it’s enough to want to take an active role in the process of learning more about yourself and your opportunities for change.

  • Some good news: you don’t have to! You may or may not already know what’s bringing you in. Planning for the future, life transitions and stressors, repetitive arguments, a mental health diagnosis, distribution of labor, desire for better intimacy, lack of trust, identity exploration, experiences of oppression, a big decision, an affair, co-parenting, and opening up a relationship are just some of many themes you may hope to address in relationship therapy.

You are likely ready for couples therapy if you are willing to consider how you might be contributing to the cycle you find yourselves in and feel willing to put earnest, difficult work into your relationship during and between sessions.

You are likely not ready for couples therapy if one (or more) of you is looking for a quick fix, struggling in active addiction, holding back on a big secret, in an ongoing affair, or think you may be in an abusive relationship. If you believe you are experiencing abuse, consider reaching out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline for support and resources.

  • If you decide to work with me, you’ll find that I aim for our first session to feel like an organic, flexible conversation.

During our first hour, we might discuss what brought you into therapy, the context surrounding that concern, and various aspects of your history, identities, and present-day life.

We also might discover that you would benefit from an approach or technique that I don’t offer. In that case, I would support you in finding a better fit by providing you with referrals to other clinicians.

  • At the start of each session, I will usually invite you to share what feels important to you to discuss. We might revisit an old theme, process something you experienced since the last time we met, pick up where we left off last session, celebrate positive changes, or work through a current stressor.

During some, most, or all of our sessions, you may experience strong or uncomfortable feelings. As a team, you and I will hold and work through them together as we explore the origins and wisdom of your emotions. Processing your feelings in the ‘here-and-now’ of the therapy hour will often help us reach a deeper understanding of your patterns as well as potential avenues for change.

  • I ask for at least 48 hours’ notice on all cancellations. In most cases, you will be charged your full session fee for cancellations made within 48 hours of your appointment.

I hold myself to the same standard. If I have to cancel a session within 48 hours of our appointment time, your next session will be free.

I grant each of us one ‘freebie’ cancellation per calendar year.
